How Pilgrim Church is Governed

Not everyone wants to get into the nuts-and-bolts of how a church runs. But just in case you were wondering….

The basic unit in the United Church of Christ (UCC) is the local church, and each UCC church governs itself. This is different from the way many other Christian denominations and churches operate, such as the Catholic and Methodist denominations, which have hierarchical structures. There is no UCC hierarchy or body that can impose any doctrine or worship format on individual congregations.  However, the UCC denomination provides a connectivity among congregations and offers guidance that our congregation holds in high regard, and that we may choose to follow.

Pilgrim governs itself in the Congregationalist tradition. That means the ultimate decision-making power in our church is held by the members of our congregation. The whole congregation votes on major decisions, such as the passage of our annual budget and election of officers, and each member of the church has an equal vote.

Pilgrim has our own constitution and bylaws that our congregation adopted. Our bylaws provide that the “executive body” of Pilgrim is our Executive Ministry Team (EMT), which consists of the 4 officers we elect at our annual meeting (Moderator, Vice Moderator, Clerk and Treasurer), plus our 8 Ministry Team Leaders, plus our Senior Pastor Peter Robinson is a member of EMT ex-officio.

Our 8 Ministry Teams are responsible to carry out the various tasks that keep the church alive and functioning:  Administration and Personnel; Christian Discipleship (Sunday School); Worship & Music; Physical Facilities; Stewardship; Communications & Membership; Justice Peace & Mission; and Vitality.

Our bylaws also establish various other specific committees that perform important work in the life of our church, such as the Finance Committee and Endowment Funds Administrative Committee, whose members are appointed by EMT, and the Memorial Committee, whose members represent 4 of our Ministry Teams, plus the Men’s and Women’s Fellowships.

Pilgrim’s Executive Ministry Team (EMT) meets on the second Monday of every month, and ALL members of the congregation are welcome to attend, observe, or provide input at any or all of Pilgrim’s EMT meetings.
